What is the HUI300 Challenge?
The HUI300 Challenge is a Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Chapter, initiative to encourage independent yet measurable team efforts to clean watersheds and beaches throughout the year. Teams (or “hui”) of 3 or more remove debris from watersheds or beaches during the year.
What is a “hui”?
A “hui” [pronounced “who-ee”] is Hawaiian for a group or club.
How do I get started?
Name your hui: Hui Wahines, Hui Encinitas, Hui SanO (or join an existing hui);
Get two others to commit to 100 days of eco-service during the year: and
Register and self-report as you go.
What is a day of eco-service?
Removing at least three pieces of debris or trash from a watershed or beach equals one day of eco-service for the HUI300 Challenge. Here, more is always better!
How does a hui qualify for the HUI300 Challenge?
To prevail in the HUI300 Challenge, a minimum of three Hui members must each complete 100 days of eco-service during the year, for a combined total of at least 300.
What is the minimum size of a hui?
Three.
What is the maximum size of a hui?
There is no membership limit.
What is the reward for meeting the HUI300 Challenge?
Hui members will enjoy the personal satisfaction of completing a rigorous environmental standard that improved the quality of ocean, waves, and beaches. Also, public recognition for prevailing in the HUI300 Challenge!!!
Which hui will be recognized for meeting the HUI300 Challenge?
Every qualifying hui and their qualifying members will be recognized for their victory in meeting the HUI300 Challenge!!!

Who is the Hui Nui?
The Hui Nui is the hui with the largest number of qualifying members during the calendar year. San Diego Surfrider will proclaim the Hui Nui after the end of the year as an accolade for an extraordinary environmental team effort.
What are the origins of the HUI300 Challenge?
The origins of the HUI300 Challenge come from a number of sources:
Duke and the Hui;
Mei and Manu: The Turtle and the Gooney Bird;
Julia and Jim: Surfrider Activists;
Cobi and Pick-Up-3; and
Volunteer Environmental Heroes.
